Il Papavero is our delicious, easy-going, bestselling red. ItÕs made very much like a New World wine in that the winemaker puts together parcels of grapes from different areas to make the best style. As a consequence, he breaks all the appellation rules and must be content with calling his creation a humble vino da tavola. Indeed, since the 1980s and the rise of the Super Tuscans, vino da tavola has acquired a certain cachet. The key to PapaveroÕs success is the acclaimed and welltravelled
Scipione Giuliani. He has skilfully combined some of ItalyÕs most characterful grapes Ð ChiantiÕs cherry-laden Sangiovese sourced from the Marche, AbruzzoÕs soft-fruited, big, plummy Montepulciano and SicilyÕs dark, spicy Negroamaro and Nero
dÕAvola, each one carefully blended to produce an easy-going, richly flavoured and extremely moreish red. This vintage
Scipione has increased the portion of big black Negroamaro, which was particularly good in 2010, and dropped a little of the Sangiovese, But, overall, you will find your beloved Papavero in very much the same rich, fruity style. The name ÔPapaveroÕ
comes from the Italian word for poppy, the wild red flower depicted on the label which, in Italy, symbolises simplicity and serenity. Because of its wild origins, the poppy spreads easily and historically was to be found growing in and around many Italian vineyards, adding colour and warmth to the fields.
SERVING Il Papavero is a delightfully versatile red, tasty solo or sipped with food. Pasta makes the perfect partner, from a simple dish of spaghetti with a tomato, garlic and basil sauce to a richer one of lasagne. ItÕs also an ideal choice with grilled chicken or lamb, Margherita pizza or antipasti Ð cold meats, salami or vegetable nibbles. Drink by end 2013.
